Empower, Educate, Heal

"Maybe you'll be able to have a VBAC, you can try at least." That's what I was told when I went to my OB after finding out I was pregnant with my second child. My first child was born via C-section after 16 hours of labor with an epidural, I pushed for 4 hours and he just wasn't coming through the birth canal so they opted to do a C-section because his heart rate began dropping. I was devastated. I worked so hard only to end up in the operating room. So when I found out I was pregnant again I was determined to have an empowering birth, and to NOT end up with another C-section. When my OB told me I could "try" it, it felt like he lacked confidence in me, which, in turn, eroded my trust in the entire care team. This experience highlighted the importance of feeling supported and believed in throughout pregnancy and birth.

Deciding on care during pregnancy looks different for everyone. It is so important to consider what is most important to you, how you want your birth to look like, what kind of care you want etc. I ultimately decided to deliver with a group of midwives because I wanted more hands on and someone to be there for my entire birth, not just when I was ready to push. But that may not be for everyone! Maybe you're someone who feels better with an OB doctor instead of a midwife and that is okay too! You get to decide! Pregnancy and birth are a very vulnerable time in a woman's life so it's important to have the support you need and want.

Another option to think about when considering who you want on your birth team is a doula! The term "doula" comes from the ancient Greek word meaning "a woman who serves." Doula's are meant to be a reassuring guide through your pregnancy and birth, they are not medical personnel, they care for your mental and emotional needs but they also have the medical information so that they know what's going on and can guide you and help you throughout your birth. Doula's advocate for you and empower you to choose the birth you want. I encourage you to have the confidence to choose your team and not let others dissuade you from what you really want.
